We have been asked many times “So, what’s the 2/6 project all about?” and my answer is really simple, “it is a great excuse to get together with some friends, brew some beer and have a party!”

_GRM3608The 2/6 project came about because many of us, working in the industry, spend a lot of time together traveling to see customers, attending conferences and at festivals. As such you become good friends. That said we rarely get together with families and partners in tow. 2/6 project was a good excuse to get together and do what we love (make beer) with the people that we enjoy to spend time with: our friends and families.

So we invited some friends, booked some bands, organised someone to BBQ, arranged entertainment for the kids and cleared some space at the brewery. Then came the beer!

Although the brewing industry as a whole is a very collaborative place, we decided to make it a bit more fun by incorporating a little competition. So we split the 6 breweries invited into two teams, each team then put their heads together to come up with a recipe. We would then release the two beers and ask people to vote for which they preferred.

We decided we wouldn’t release the beers naming which breweries were in each team to stop people voting for their favourite breweries and keep it all about the beers.

Team 2 decided to brew a Saison, with orange and turmeric and then dry hopped with Hallerteau Blanc. Team 6 decided to keep it simple (except for the million stage stepped mash) and brew an IPA. The full ingredients of both beers is listed below.

_GRM3697On Friday night everyone made their way down to Constantine Bay in North Cornwall for a pre brew beverage or two, most arriving early evening, but a special mention must go to James from Cloudwater who went to the wrong Constantine and ended up 1.5 hours further down the peninsular near Falmouth. Anyway, early Saturday morning arrived and Team 2 appeared bleary eyed and maybe a little worse for wear. The mash for the Saison was on for 7am and the team, with some help from some of team 6, prepared the additions, grating a lot of fresh turmeric and orange peel. The other members of team 6 appeared one by one throughout the morning with lots of coffee, and the odd beer, being consumed. The brew went pretty well but never have I seen a emptied Whirlpool look quite like it did after the turmeric and orange peel had worked their magic. Team 6 got their brew underway as soon as the Saison had reached the kettle. A multi stage mash, and I mean multi stage, was the only complicated thing with the second brew and all went swimmingly. By 5pm both beers were safely in tank and friends and family started to arrive for the evening activities. All the breweries involved provided some amazing beers, and as far as free bars go it was a pretty spectacular line up. With the beers flowing and the kids entertained on the inflatables outside, the party started. We had some great local bands, our friends The Grenaways headlining, and my old housemate Andy served up some amazing BBQ food. We danced and drank late into the night. A big thanks to everyone who came, we had a fantastic evening.
